The Vestal Virgins were priestesses of Vesta, the Roman goddess of the hearth. They are chosen from aristocratic families when they are about 8 years old, and serve for at least 30 years. They watch over the eternal flame in the temple. The Romans believed if the flame went out, Rome was in trouble.
