Timeline of some important events:

  • 1938: Indira joined the Indian National Congress
  • September 1942: Indira and her husband were imprisoned over her role in the Quit India Movement
  • 1955: Indira Gandhi became a member of the Congress Working Committee and Central Election Party 
  • 1958: Indira was elected as a member of the Congress Central Parliamentary Board
  • 1959: Indira was elected as the President of the Congress 
  • 1964: Indira's father died and the Prime Minister (at the time) Lal Bahadur Shastri appointed Indira as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting
    • The importance of this position is that it was considered the 4th highest-ranking position in the Cabinet because the radio and television were considered vital medial to spread information to citizens of the country, many of which couldn't read so had no other source for info.
  • 1966: Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri suddenly died and Indira took over as Prime Minister 
    • Her actions/accomplishments during her time as Prime Minister: HERE 
  • 1975: Indira was criticized for authoritarian tendencies and government corruption. The Allahabad High Court found her guilty of dishonest election practices, excessive election expenditure and of using government resources for party purposes. Instead of resigning, Gandhi declared a state of emergency and imprisoned thousands of her opponents.
  • 1977: Indira stepped down with her defeat in the 1977 election
  • 1978: She was briefly jailed on charges of corruption
  • 1979: Indira won election to the Lok Sabha (the lower level of parliament) 
  • 1980: Indira returned to power as prime minister 
  • 1984: Indira ordered the Indian army to confront Sikh separatists at their sacred Golden Temple in Amritsar, resulting in several hundred reported casualties, with others estimating the human toll to be significantly higher
  • October 31, 1984: Gandhi was shot and killed by two of her bodyguards, both Sikhs, in retribution for the attack at the Golden Temple
